Waste incineration produces slag, ash and heat. Slag and ash account for roughly 4 to 10 per cent of the original volume — around 15 per cent by weight.

From bottom ash back to metal
Müller-Guttenbrunn was among the first recycling companies to research the use of the metallic share in slags.
Slag — also called bottom ash — consists mostly of inorganic material, often forms solid agglomerates and can be rich in metals. Those metals are precisely why processing is worthwhile.
Treating incineration slag is now routine. Parts of our process come from shredder residue processing: here too the task is to break down a highly heterogeneous mixture with physical separation processes until usable metal concentrates remain.
The volume of incinerated waste has risen considerably in recent years. This material stream is therefore growing — and with it the amount of metal that would otherwise be permanently lost.
